The 1892 Shipwreck Changed Maritime Safety

On February 27, 1892, a sudden storm killed several fishermen in Póvoa de Varzim — an event known as “the shipwreck.” This tragedy highlighted the need for improved maritime safety and led to the founding of the Institute for Shipwreck Relief, which still plays a vital role in protecting fishermen and responding to maritime emergencies in Portugal.
